Make seat reservations along the way
Unfortunately, it is not possible to make seat reservations on all European trains from home. In France, Spain and Portugal, for instance, you can often only make seat reservations on the station from which you are taking the train. In other countries, you can make seat reservations with the local railway companies in advance..

If you are travelling by global train (high-speed) in Italy, you can choose to receive your ticket as an e-ticket.
However, seat reservation for international (cross-border) connections and night trains can only be collected at a station in Italy or be delivered to an address in Italy.
If you make seat reservations with Trenitalia for international day trains, you need your passport number.
You can book trains in Italy in advance with the Italian railway operator Trenitalia.

You need seat reservation for most international connections, high-speed trains and night trains (global trains) in Europe. In the Interrail timetable, you can see which trains require seat reservation. Trains that require seat reservation are marked with an R next to the train.

You can plan your journey from home using the Interrail timetable, but the easiest way to make seat reservations on trains in Europe is by contacting the stations along the way. In fact, in some countries, it is only possible to make seat reservations on the station you depart from. This is the case in France, Spain and Portugal.
Some counties also charge a fee for seat reservations, e.g. the Netherlands. There may also be restrictions on how many reservations you can make at the same time. In the Netherlands, for example, you can buy a maximum of two seat reservations at a time.
France has a limited number of seats for interrailers on their global and high-speed trains.
We can help you make reservations for the journey in DSB Salg & Service at the central station in Aarhus, Odense or Copenhagen or at +45 70 13 14 18.

No, an interrail pass is not valid as seat reservation. On some trains, you therefore need to make and pay for a seat reservation. The easiest way to make seat reservations on trains in Europe is by contacting the stations along the way on your journey.

The following trains in France or to France have seat reservation requirements and/or a limited number of seats for interrailers:
TGV (all national and international connections).
- Thalys (all connections between France and the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany).
- InterCité or InterCité de Nuit (seat reservation required on some connections).
- Paris-Frankfurt ICE (seat reservation required)
-Eurostar
-
If there are no more seats available for interrailers on the train you want to take, you can buy a single-ride ticket for that part of the journey. Alternatively, you can find another connection or choose a connection with a regional train without seat reservation.

Yes, on most regional trains in Europe, seat reservation is not required for interrailers, and many InterCity and InterCityExpress trains in Germany do not have seat reservation requirements.
It may be a good idea to travel on connections where seat reservation is not required. This will give you more freedom to choose exactly the day and departure that suits you.
Many of the high-speed trains may be fully booked during the peak season. This is another reason why it is often a good idea to travel by regional train. However, the journey will be longer and often involves several changes of trains, but you will also see more along the way and have time to enjoy the landscape.
In the Interrail timetable, you can search for connections without seat reservation requirements by checking the field 'Avoid trains that require reservations'. This will show you the best alternative train connections without seat reservation requirements.
